Pause. Stop. Rewind. Play

Article Abstract:

Video technology has had a significant impact on the lives of ordinary people in the UK. People now take it for granted that they can record television programmes to watch later at their own convenience, and often choose to watch films on video, rather than going to the cinema. Films on video are often watched in the same way as people read books, with frequent breaks and rewinding in order to take up the thread of the plot again. Video has made it possible to establish a significant level of personal autonomy in relation to cultural matters.

The vision of perfection

Article Abstract:

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands, is staging an exhibition entitled 'Still-Life Paintings from the Netherlands 1550-1720.' This is the most extensive collection of Dutch still-lifes ever brought together in a single location, with around 70 works on display. Nearly all the paintings are by artists who are no longer very well known, such as Osias Beert and Ambrosius Bosschaert. This does not matter, as the appeal of classic Dutch still-life is not influenced by the reputation of the artist.
