A Poverty Profile for Rural Botswana

Article Abstract:

The poor do not constitute a homogeneous group. They have various characteristics which combine to form poverty profiles. These profiles indicate demographic and economic features which policy makers can utilize in determining assistance needs. Rural Botswana is a peasant economy. Cattle raising is its most important form of income, followed by crop cultivation and wage labor. The population is also occupied with hunting and gathering, and craftmaking. Male migration from the rural area to the mines and urban centers is prevalent. A survey serves as a basis for analysis of poverty ratio groups to determine how close households come to meeting its needs.
