Pressure grows for decision on EU currency

Article Abstract:

A single European currency will not be introduced by 2000, as originally planned, unless political decisions on the most basic issues involved can be made. The French government is now planning to make the details of a single currency a priority item for discussion at the Cannes summit in Jun 1995, where issues including legal changes required to make the move to a single currency and the distribution, printing and minting of the new currency must be settled. The European Commission is particularly keen for urgent decisions to be made on the design of the notes and coins.

Our man in Brussels faces two ways

Article Abstract:

Sir Nigel Wicks, a senior UK Treasury official, is also chairman of the European Monetary Committee, which is creating the structural basis of Economic and Monetary Union. He is in a very paradoxical position, as he is playing a key role in preparing for a development which is strongly opposed by Euro-sceptics in the UK. He must be careful to represent the interests of the majority of member states, rather than those of the UK, when working in his European capacity.

Good ship 'Emu' wrenched back on course

Article Abstract:

European finance ministers attending the recent summit in Valencia, Spain, expressed their determination that monetary union will go ahead according to schedule, with a single European currency being introduced in 1999. They have faced considerable pressure recently to delay the process, but have now shown that they will overlook all reservations. They now face the task of convincing the general public.
