Pressure on Tories over 15m pounds sterling debt

Article Abstract:

The Conservative party still has an overdraft of 15 million pounds sterling, and is coming under growing pressure from its bankers to reduce this as soon as possible. It has been revealed that the party has slipped behind with a plan agreed with the Royal Bank of Scotland, which holds most of the overdraft, to reduce the debt. This comes at a time when the party is already facing considerable instability and upheaval.

Nadir's donations part of campaign for knighthood

Article Abstract:

Turkish Cypriot Asil Nadir contributed 940,000 pounds sterling to the Conservative Party between 1983 and 1991 in the hope of receiving a knighthood. He also donated millions to charities and the Royal Opera House and Sadler's Wells. He threatened former party treasurer Lord McAlpine that he would publicise his contributions if the Tory party did not remove the charges of theft and false accounting against him.

QC fuelled Mates campaign

Article Abstract:

Mr Asil Nadir's counsel Anthony Scrivener QC alleged to MP (Member of Parliament) Michael Mates that the authorities had acted in an oppressive, unjustified manner. Attorney General Sir Nicholas Lyell published a letter he wrote to Mr Mates on Feb 15 about the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigation into Mr Nadir's business affairs. Mr Mates seeks a review of the SFO's conduct by an independent lawyer.
