Private investors stay at home

Article Abstract:

Private client investors vary in terms of their needs, and this is one problem when seeking to develop benchmarks for portfolio management. The United Kingdom Association of Private Client Investment Managers and Stockbrokers has developed benchmarks following consultations with portfolio managers. Mangers tend to invest 30% of clients's assets abroad compared to 15% for pension fund managers. The UK stock market ranks third world wide which is a high ranking in relation to the size of the UK economy.

Bull market throws up another hazard: information overload

Article Abstract:

Investment managers face an excess of information during the UK bull market in 1997, and need to be able to read fast. They have been presented with two contradictory surveys on the United Kingdom housing market. Nationwide argues that it is performing strongly, while Halifax sees slower growth. This is because Nationwide operates in a wider market, and Halifax focuses more on London and areas where price rises are stronger. Other reports include a report from Create on the financial sector.

Banks hit by takeover fever

Article Abstract:

Banks will be involved in more takeovers in the United Kingdom, and this helps push up their stock prices. Many new banks have been created and investors could select stocks in one of these new banks hoping that it will be acquired. Automation and telephone banking mean that consolidation is inevitable. This is especially true for mainland Europe. Germany has two times as many banks per inhabitant as the UK, and consolidation is only starting in Germany.
