Prodi forges a new Presidential style

Article Abstract:

Incoming European Commission Pres Romano Prodi has presented his vision for European integration and enlargement. He has called for a doubling of the number of European Union member countries and a fixed schedule for expansion to the east. It is anticipated that the European Parliament will approve all 19 members of Prodi's team, although some reservations have been expressed about Belgian commissioner-designate for research Philippe Busquin and Spanish vice-president designate Loyola de Palacio.

Germans invite wrath of EU farmers

Article Abstract:

German proposals for reforming the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will involve a freeze on spending at 1999 levels between 2000 and 2006. There are also calls for cofinancing arrangements under which a proportion of spending on agriculture will be supplied directly by national governments. Germany is taking a tough line on 'structural assistance' for deprived areas. CAP reform is likely to bring Germany into conflict with France, which is opposed to wide-reaching change, Spain and the UK.
