Pulling the plug on the Great Electrician

Article Abstract:

Lech Walesa has been extremely influential in political developments in Poland over the last 15 years. He has been president for the last five years, but now voters have decided that he should be replaced with Aleksander Kwasniewski, who was a minister in the last Polish Communist government. Some Poles fear that this will split the country between the pro-Western forces of traditional Catholic patriotism and the modernisers and Marxists, who may possibly be looking to cooperate in reviving the Russian Empire. However, the real reason for Walesa's defeat was that most people did not see him as the right man for the presidency.
