Put diplomatic niceties aside and tell Turkey the truth

Article Abstract:

European Union officials admit privately that Turkey will not be permitted to join in the foreseeable future. However, it has been necessary for them to be more diplomatic about this issue in public. Officially, Turkey is on track to gain European Union membership. However, no guarantee has been given that Turkey will be admitted as a candidate for future European Union membership, and the Turkish government is therefore refusing to enter into negotiations. It is now time to admit publicly that it would be almost impossible for the European Union to allow Turkey to become a member.

Who'd want to be President?

Article Abstract:

Powell is one of the most respected figures in US society. However, he has decided not to use his popularity to establish a political career, having rejected the possibility of running for the presidency. It now seems very likely that the presidency will be retained by Bill Clinton, unless Rev Jesse Jackson manages to gain more popular support among democrats. Powell's decision is probably wise, as no public figure can ever rely on remaining popular.
