Putting in the extra Miles

Article Abstract:

It is important to see the continuity in the life and work of jazz trumpeter Miles Davis, according to Ian Carr, who began his biography of Davis in 1975. A new edition of this book, which offers a fascinating insight into almost 50 years of extremely high quality music, has now been published. Carr places strong emphasis on music, stating that without music there would be no story to recount at all. He is pleased with some of the things he has written, including his comments about the album 'Milestones.'

Please, do not adjust your set

Article Abstract:

The latest work by Robin Rimbaud, who uses the name Scanner for his works based on human voices picked up by an electronic scanning device, is a setting of 'The Human Voice.' This is in turn an adaptation of Jean Cocteau's 'La Voix Humaine,' a one-act monodrama from which French composer Francis Poulenc created his final opera in the late 1950s. 'The Human Voice' addresses some of the issues tackled by modern visual artists. It is particularly striking for its disturbing use of noise.

The sonic saboteur

Article Abstract:

Musician, composer and record producer John Cale has been very influential, particularly in pioneering a shift away from the traditional rock 'n' roll sound. He was a founder member of the Velvet Underground, a group whose first album, although commercially a failure, has inspired many bands. Since leaving the Velvet Underground, he has been involved in a wide range of projects. He had a successful partnership with Nico, and also produced Patti Smith's 'Horses.'
