Putting the Queen in her place

Article Abstract:

Andrew Festing's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, currently being exhibited by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters at the Mall Galleries in London, England, conveys significant messages about the role of the monarchy in UK society. It indicates that history is not heritage. Authority comes from the ordinary people, rather than from the monarch. This portrait, in which the Queen wears the outfit in which she performs the State Opening of Parliament, can be seen as a strong affirmation of parliamentary democracy.
