Q: Have taxes risen under Labour? A: Well, it depends who's asking...

The need to keep fiscal reforms simple

Article Abstract:

There are many difficulties associated with the UK's tax system. Indeed, the system is often unfair, complex and inefficient. However, it is important to avoid making changes to the system in a piecemeal fashion, thus making it even more complex. Before any changes are made, it is vital to consider how these may be abused or distorted by taxpayers seeking to reduce their liabilities. Problems of this kind are particularly likely to arise in the field of the taxation of savings.
