Rare butterfly habitat faces threat from opencast mine

Article Abstract:

British Coal Opencast (BCO) and English Nature plan to conserve the natural habitat of coalfields no longer mined, but development plans in Cefn Cribwr, Bridgend, Wales, are controversial. The Secretary of State for Wales John Redwood has the final say after a public inquiry in 1991. BCO managed the 250-acre Park Slip nature park jointly with the Glamorgan Wildlife Trust. It is a breeding ground for the marsh fritillary butterfly. Objectors include Butterfly Conservation, who are concerned about the relationship between BCO and the trust.

The Nigel Kennedy of classical lawns

Article Abstract:

Garden archaeology is a new discipline which reveals more about the past by digging up old gardens or sites of gardens. A leader in the new subject is Christopher Currie who not only identifies old garden patterns but analyses seeds and soil with revealing results. Ancient gardens also disclose much about the society who planted them, as many designers used allegories in their plantings.
