Record number of police inquiring into charges against colleagues

Article Abstract:

There are now 800 police officers in England and Wales involved in investigating complaints and allegations of corruption against fellow officers in other forces. The Police Complaints Authority has 19 ongoing investigations into serious cases, and there are growing concerns that police resources are being diverted away from fighting crime. A number of alternative approaches, including the use of a national network of independent ombudsmen linked to each police force, are being considered.

Clarence Kelley

Article Abstract:

Clarence Kelley was born in Kansas City in 1911 and became the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI) permanent director in 1973, following Edgar J. Hoover. He introduced computers into the FBI, and changed recruitment policies so women, Hispanics and African Americans were also taken on. He focused on white-collar crime and organized crime rather than communism feared by his predecessor. He retired in 1978 after political factors had made his position difficult.
