Regulator backs down on electricity price cuts

Article Abstract:

UK electricity regulator Stephen Littlechild has announced that domestic electricity charges will fall by an average of between 7.5% and 10% in 1998. This compares with the cut of 12% forecast in a consultation paper issued in Jul 1997. The reduction in charges has been limited as a result of claims by regional electricity companies that price controls would cause them to make losses on their supply activities. This would in turn act as a disincentive for others to enter the market when domestic competition is implemented in Apr 1998.

BAe casts fresh doubt on Airbus super-jumbo

Article Abstract:

British Aerospace is expressing growing scepticism about plans by the European Airbus consortium to construct a very large 600-seater 'super-jumbo.' This comes shortly after the decision by Boeing to drop plans to develop a stretched version of its 747. British Aerospace is now calling on Airbus to focus on developing an enlarged version of the existing A340. It is not fully convinced that there would be sufficient demand for the 'super-jumbo.'

Lang stuns City by blocking rival bids for South West by Severn Trent and Wessex

Article Abstract:

Severn Trent and Wessex Water have seen their rival bids for South West Water blocked by Ian Lang, president of the UK's board of trade. The decision, which was prompted by the Monopolies and Mergers Commission's concerns about the public interest, has come as a great surprise to the stock market. It now appears that no further mergers will be permitted between privatised water companies.
