Revealed at last: secrets of the ceremonies

Article Abstract:

The Open University holds 26 graduation ceremonies each year for its around 8,000 graduands. In 1999, the graduation season began at Harrogate, England, in Apr. The final ceremony will take place in Brussels, Belgium, in Sep 1999. The Open University aims to hold graduation ceremonies in locations that will be accessible for all graduands, and therefore holds at least one ceremony in each of its 13 regions in Britain and Ireland and one at a location in Continental Western Europe. A great deal of preparatory work must take place before each ceremony.

Serving the parts that other universities cannot reach

Article Abstract:

The Open University has established a very strong presence in the Highlands and Islands region of , where local people would otherwise have to move away from home in order to study for a degree. New technology is being used to connect students to their tutors, but the telephone is still the main tuition medium. Conference calls are used for group tutorials, with the tutors receiving specific training in how to manage these tutorials to ensure that all students derive maximum benefit.

Sexual equality - still an academic issue

Article Abstract:

Women continue to find it difficult to reach the top academic posts at UK universities. Indeed, only 8% of professors are women. It is common for women who do reach top positions to have encountered sexism and to have had to be extremely determined. Sexism is not a problem at the Open University, which recognizes the need to have a proportion of women in each subject area. Nevertheless, only 17.1% of the Open University's professors are female.
