Rights and wrongs of war

Article Abstract:

Liaising with local officials is very important, according to Major Jo Bowen, one of two solicitors sent by the British Army to Macedonia to advise on the protocol of the Geneva Convention and on rules of engagement. She points out that the British Army's influence in the camps for ethnic Albanian refugees from Kosovo, Yugoslavia, is limited in terms of security, as the camps are controlled by Macedonia and the UNHCR. She has had to deal with problems arising from the Macedonian authorities ordering British soldiers to appear before their courts following road traffic accidents.

DS Roberts calls it a day

Article Abstract:

Black police officers can often feel that they do not really belong to the police force, according to Norwell Roberts, who was the first black officer to join the Metropolitan Police, in 1967. He only ever made one official complaint about racial harassment, and this was ignored. He was generally well accepted by ordinary people, but some members of the black community regarded him as a traitor. He was shamelessly exploited by the Metropolitan Police in its efforts to portray itself as having good race relations.
