Room to grow

Article Abstract:

There are still serious problems facing the Polish agricultural industry, including the inefficient nature of small farms and subsidy limitations. It is now widely recognised that the sector needs to be restructured, especially if it is to meet the criteria for Poland's admission to the European Union. However, this will cost around 1 billion Ecu a year. The government is to accelerate a programme offering farm leases, and will also make low-interest credit available to farmers looking to modernise their equipment.

Living room furniture

Article Abstract:

Sales of living room furniture in the UK reached an estimated 630 million pounds sterling in 1998. The market has enjoyed strong sales for much of the 1990s, with demand being fuelled by rising disposable incomes, housing market growth and attractive credit offers. The flatpack or self-assembly furniture market accounts for 56% of total living room furniture sales. This market has grown strongly as attractive prices and better quality pull in more customers. Rigid furniture sales, however, have also grown steadily.

Living - and dying - together

Article Abstract:

The UK Law Society is calling for legal protection for cohabitees in relation to property and financial rights. The areas which need to be reviewed include life assurance, maintenance and pension arrangements. The Law Society believes that the government should implement cohabitation contracts, under which cohabitees would be able to share their partner's life assurance and pensions and gain the right to apply for maintenance if the relationship fails.
