Taming the unruly people of Georgia

Article Abstract:

Chairman of the 234-seat, 25-party parliament in Georgia, Asia, Eduard Shevardnadze, feels that Russia aggravates the country's instability by aiding rebels and stopping the supply of roubles. The Russians supported South Ossetia against Tbilisi and sent air strikes against Gerogians to help Abkhazian rebels. Mr Shevardnadze intends to train a new army. The economy may collapse as output per head fell 45% in 1992 to 38 pounds sterling per year, supplies are low and trade routes are limited by fighting.

Why Turkey is too important to sideline

Article Abstract:

Turkey regarded itself until relatively recently as culturally and economically separate from the rest of the world. However, it is now actively seeking rapid convergence with other countries. It recently entered a Customs Union with Europe, reflecting the fact that European Union countries account for half of its overall trade and two-thirds of inbound investment. However, it may be some time before Turkey is accepted as a European Union member.
