A day in the death of the Commons

Article Abstract:

Many observers feel that the House of Commons is becoming increasingly insignificant in political life in the UK. It is often almost empty, and appears to take little notice of the wishes of voters. Many European directives and regulations are passed without being properly debated, and this trend may increase as new legislation delegates more powers to ministers. Some observers feel that, against this background, moves to increase MPs salaries are not justified.

Tory left prepares to leave

Article Abstract:

It is possible that the left wing of the Conservative party would resign the party whip and eventually forge links with the Liberal Democrats if William Hague were to win the party leadership. Former Chancellor Kenneth Clarke has already stated that he would feel unable to serve in a shadow cabinet under Hague, but this has been dismissed as blackmail by Hague's supporters. The desertion of the party whip could involve up to 12 pro-European Conservative MPs.
