Save the suburban sofa

Article Abstract:

BBC1 Controller Peter Salmon wishes to move situation comedies out of the conventional domestic setting, and in particular away from their traditional focus on the sofa as the centre of family life. This approach overlooks the fact that the quality of situation comedy cannot be defined by eliminating a certain type of subject matter. Stating that certain subject matter must be avoided also brings the danger of restricting the potential of new writers. It is also important to realize that a lot of very good comedy has emerged from the domestic and the middle-class setting.

The baffling beatification of Saint Iris

Article Abstract:

Claims of sainthood made in relation to novelist Iris Murdoch, who died in early 1999, are discussed. These claims were made from very early in her career, and by her 60s she had come to be regarded as a seraphic and almost priest-like person.
