Saving the view from the bridge

Article Abstract:

Local residents in Ludlow, England, have expressed strong opposition to plans to construct six homes in Midland red brick near the town's famous yellow limestone castle. The district council has agreed that the development will not go ahead as long as those opposed to it can match the 150,000 pounds sterling which it believes the site is worth. The Guild '98 opposition group has so far raised 23,000 pounds sterling. This group believes that unrestricted development threatens to remove the heart from this attractive town.

Cry havoc! And let slip the Tory conference

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party's annual conference has traditionally avoided controversy. However, this is unlikely to be the case in 1996, as the party is deeply divided over issues such as a single European currency. The performance of prime minister John Major at the 1996 conference will play a key role in determining the outcome of the next general election. However, it is likely to prove hard to stage-manage the conference in the same way as previous conferences.

A rash of vanity publishing from the politically extinct

Article Abstract:

It has become common in the UK for former politicians to publish their memoirs. Some do so for financial reasons, while others do so in order to try to justify their actions when they were in office. Most political memoirs are not likely to sell in very large numbers, especially if their authors are discreet and do not reveal interesting information. Former politicians due to publish memoirs shortly include John Major and Norman Lamont.
