Scale of defeat sets Tory alarm bells ringing

Article Abstract:

On Jul 29, 1993, the Conservative vote in Christchurch, England, fell by 32 percentage points when the Liberal Democrat candidate was elected. Half of those who voted Conservative in the 1992 general election did not do so in the mid-term election. This is the largest swing against a government since 1918. The recession does not affect the prosperous or retired residents of the area and there is little economic pessimism. Labour received 2.7% of the vote, demonstrating tactical voting. However, Christchurch is expected to vote Conservative at the next general election.

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party will give equal esteem to the nationalist and unionist communities in Northern Ireland if it wins the forthcoming general election. It is vital that one community is not accorded respect at the expense of the other, and it is very important to take a proactive approach in rebuilding trust and confidence following the collapse of the IRA ceasefire. Parity of esteem must be seen to be effective in practice, as this is the only way for confidence to grow between communities.
