Science, the new religion?

Article Abstract:

Popular science books now sell extremely well in the UK, and writers can command very large advances. Some observers interpret this trend very positively, believing that it indicates that ignorance and superstition are now being eliminated and that scientific answers are being provided to religious questions. However, others are expressing concern, pointing particularly to the growing number of pseudo-science books which present very misleading views. Books which seem to provide flawless answers to key questions are serving simply to undermine the integrity of scientific writing.

The dean, the verger and her fantasy

Article Abstract:

The recent trial of the Very Rev Brandon Jackson, Dean of Lincoln, accused of having an affair with one of his parishioners, ended in success for the defendant. However, the case has caused considerable embarrassment for the Church of England. It shows that there is no mechanism in existing church law which allows a judgement to be made about the outcome of a trial of this kind, as the church prosecutors can only decide whether there is a case to answer. The case has highlighted the problems with the Church of England being such a deep-seated establishment.

It is now available in video and tape format, and there is also a Bible Gateway service on the Internet's World Wide Web, which gives simultaneous access to five different English translations and a number of foreign languages. Most recently, Chadwyck-Healey has launched a CD-Rom containing the full text of 21 English-language versions of the Bible.
