Scots want first bite of Barclays cherry

Article Abstract:

The Royal Bank of Scotland has indicated that it wishes to be given first consideration as a candidate to merge with Barclays Bank if a merger deal is genuinely likely to take place. It is even possible that Scottish Widows would join a three-way merger. Such a development would allow Barclays to overcome the problems arising from its lack of a chief executive. All the English clearing banks would also be interested in merging with Barclays, but most observers feel that the competition authorities would not accept any further concentration in the banking market.

The Wall Street banks are playing poker and a merger is on the cards

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reports about the likelihood of a merger between investment banks Merrill Lynch and Chase Manhattan. It is widely known that Chase Manhattan is seeking a merger deal, and it is rumoured that Merrill Lynch must now take action to revive its fortunes following the damage caused by the bail-out of hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management in autumn 1998. Chase Manhattan has made it clear that there is no point seeking a merger with a second-tier investment bank.
