The cost of services in the UK is rising, while the cost of goods is falling. This trend could bring significant problems. Various solutions are suggested, including the need for service industries to recognize that they must push down their costs.

The difficulties currently facing National Westminster Bank and supermarket chain Sainsbury's, neither of which are likely to survive as an independent entity, highlight the emergence of a new trend among large companies in the UK. New technology is having a significant impact in many business sectors, and even the largest players are having to make many adjustments. Furthermore, shareholders are now unwilling to give companies much time to address the repercussions of strategic errors.
