Make no mistake, Mr Blair would like us to join the euro

Article Abstract:

It seems clear that UK Prime Minister Tony Blair wants to take the country into the European single currency before the next election, as long as the obstacles can be cleared. However, if he pushes too hard on this issue he will fuel rumours about a split between him and Chancellor Gordon Brown.

Suddenly it's no longer whether we embrace the euro, but when

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has taken care to emphasize that nothing has changed regarding policy on European monetary union membership. However, there are indications that this policy is becoming more unstable. Some monetary union supporters outside the government are becoming increasingly outspoken, while mainstream business opinion also seems to be moving in favour of monetary union membership. At the same time, those who are opposed to monetary union membership are becoming a more cohesive force, and the government is beginning to realize that second-wave access negotiations would be very complex.

Mr Blair is doing to the dole what De Gaulle did to Algeria

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has made it clear that he intends to make radical changes to welfare provision, ensuring that people no longer take it for granted that they will be financially supported by the state. This is likely to prove a controversial issue within the Labour party, and there will be a number of concerted efforts to amend the Welfare Reform and Pensions Bill. This legislation will mark the beginning of a more extensive process of reform, eliminating the worst inconsistencies and injustices of the current welfare system.
