Sculptors sock it to the masses

Article Abstract:

It has become increasingly common in the UK for sculptures to be commissioned as focal points for town centres or business headquarters. However, there are mixed views about the trend towards public works of art. Some observers feel that the money spent on sculptures should be used for more useful purposes, and there have been cases of sculptures being vandalized. Sculptors themselves also have mixed views about their work being displayed in public, especially as this can reduce their artistic freedom.

Old Possum's treasury of smutty verse

Article Abstract:

Christopher Ricks, the editor of a new collection of previously unpublished early poems by TS Eliot which is to be published shortly, is aware that there may be some controversy because an appendix contains a series of limericks and fragments which are overtly pornographic. Ricks believes that it is important to allow such work to be published, as failing to do so would be to deny the strong energies which are present in life. The accessibility of the collection has been welcomed by Eliot scholars.

Empires of the kitchen kings

Article Abstract:

It has become common in the UK for top chefs to be involved in a considerable number of different restaurant ventures. In some cases, they are even associating themselves with restaurants abroad. This has led some observers to express fears that standards will fall, as each chef cannot possibly closely supervise operations at each of the restaurants with which he is associated. A small number of chefs have stood firm against the temptation to expand.
