Serbs face final countdown

Article Abstract:

Nato is speeding up the pace of its preparations for taking military action against Serb military positions in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic is being placed under strong pressure, with US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright stating that he must put an end to aggression against the Kosovar Albanians and agree to an interim settlement with an implementation force controlled by Nato. The UK is also taking a tough line, but Germany has emphasized the need to avoid confrontation.

EU threatens to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe

Article Abstract:

European Union officials will not be permitted to monitor the election in Zimbabwe in 2002 unless they can prove their neutrality, according to Foreign Minister Stan Mudenge. Zimbabwe faces European Union sanctions if it fails to allow observers at the election.

Zimbabwe: New moves to airlift 25,000 Britons

Article Abstract:

The European Union has drawn up contingency plans to remove foreign nationals from Zimbabwe should the situation there deteriorate further. However, a mass evacuation would be undertaken only as a last resort.
