Patterns of cousin marriage in rural Zhejiang and in 'Dream of the Red Chamber.'

Article Abstract:

Cross-cousin marriages and matrilineal parallel marriages are common in the rural province of Zhejiang in China. The marriage custom of the provincial folks had its origins hundreds of years ago as depicted in the 18th century Chinese novel entitled 'Dream of the Red Chamber.' In the novel, cousin marriages among members of the Jia, Wang and Xue families were part of a long-held tradition. Thus, anthropologists familiar with the marriage patterns in Zhejiang are not surprised to know that the novel ends with the marriage of cousins Jia Baoyu and Xue Baochai.
