Sex, size and schizophrenia

Article Abstract:

There seems to be growing interest in the UK in the works of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin, particularly in the run-up to the bicentenary of his birth in 1999. A new film of his epic poem 'Eugene Onegin' is due to be released in 1999, and before then a number of books about him will be published. There are a number of his descendants living in the UK, and one is chairing a Pushkin Bicentennial Trust. In modern society, Pushkin's attraction lies in the fact that he appeals directly to people's sensibilities because of his complex views on race and gender.

Professional Confessionals: fashionable but nothing new

Article Abstract:

There has been a strong trend in the UK in the 1990s towards people making their feelings known in public. This has been seen particularly in journalism, where there are now many columnists who specialize in a confessional style of writing and where a number of writers have published accounts of fatal or life-threatening diseases. Some observers regard this trend as a sign of a shift towards increased inclusiveness. However, it is important to remember that the same trend was very prevalent in the middle of the 18th century.

Mario Lanza, the once and future tenor

Article Abstract:

There is still considerable controversy surrounding Mario Lanza, the tenor who enjoyed a very successful 10-year career before his death in 1959 at the age of 38. Various claims have been made about the circumstances of his death, and there is also conflict between his son Damon and his daughter Elissa over his estate. Damon and business associate and The Lanza Newsletter co-publisher Bob Dolfi are denying Elissa access to 60 cases of Landza's effects stored unopened in California since his death.
