Mirror images of sad genius

Article Abstract:

Russian film director Andrei Tarkovsky regarded his film 'Mirror,' rejected at the time but now seen as a classic, as a way of trying to escape from his sense of guilt, according to his sister, Marina Tarkovskaya. Their family did not talk very much about personal relationships, and communication was often simply in the form of intuition. He distanced himself from his family for many years after his divorce from his first wife, and only re-established contact when his son from his second wife was born.

Think the unthinkable about the unsinkable

Article Abstract:

Eisenstein's film 'Battleship Potemkin' is still held in high esteem, even though most Hollywood films made to the same formula have faded into obscurity. However, it is possible to argue that there are a number of negative elements to this film. The acting is two-dimensional, and the film lacks shading. It has a strong propaganda content, and this can be rather unnerving. Nevertheless, it shows conditions that are not dissimilar to those currently being experienced in Russia.

Stand up, Britain's Spike Lee

Article Abstract:

A multicultural society is only just beginning to emerge in the UK, and this means that black British actors, actresses and filmmakers are still struggling to gain recognition. Black British filmmakers, most of whom are first-generation British, lack positive role models, and they are forced to be pioneers. Their projects are often rejected because it is very hard for those responsible for commissioning to assess whether they will be popular or not.
