Size really doesn't matter to workers

Article Abstract:

It would be a disastrous step backwards if the UK government were to go ahead with plans by deputy prime minister Michael Heseltine to drop unfair dismissal protection for staff of small businesses, according to labour law expert Dr John McMullen. The government has made many promises to reduce bureaucracy, but depriving small business employees of the right to challenge unfair dismissal is not the way to do this, and was completely unexpected. He points out that small businesses already enjoy some special treatment in this area.

When is a thief not a thief?

Article Abstract:

The Confederation of British Industry and other industry bodies are calling for a change in the law relating to trade secrets. At present, trade secrets cannot be stolen, as they are not classified as property under the Theft Act. The Law Commission has put forward draft ideas for criminalizing the misuse of trade secrets. Under suggested legislation, a trade secret would be defined as information not generally known. Its value lies in the fact that its owner does not wish it to become public knowledge.

What price justice? Quite cheap, actually

Article Abstract:

The Central London County Court has since 1996 been running a pilot mediation scheme. This is aimed at settling defended cases involving more than 3,000 pounds sterling, with no upper limit. It was initially intended to assist litigants who represent themselves, but in fact lawyers attend with around two-thirds of the parties who choose mediation. Most of the cases handled so far have related to breach of contract and supply of goods and services.
