Slain for being young and Christian

Article Abstract:

Relatives of Marlen Sitanola, a law lecturer at Pattimura University on the island of Ambon, Indonesia, believe that she and her fiance Lucas Palioma, both Christians, were murdered by Muslims. Ambon has traditionally been peaceful, but there has been great tension between Muslims and Christians since Jan 19, 1999, when rioting broke out after a clash between a Christian mini-bus driver and a Muslim passenger. Local reporters believe that more than 200 people have died, with thousands having fled their homes to live with relatives on other islands.

'It's time for me to leave. Gunfire crackles, beside me a child is born.'

Article Abstract:

Refugees in the United Nations (UN) compound in Dili, East Timor, are having to cope with extremely difficult conditions. There is heavy shooting in the city, and the Australian government has advised all foreigners to leave immediately following attacks on the Australian consulate, the only international institution in Dili apart from the UN compound. There are now large numbers of Indonesian soldiers and members of the Aitarak militia in Dili, and ordinary people are being forced to flee from their homes.

Guns at the ready to liberate the lost people of Dare

Article Abstract:

Troops from the International Force East Timor have entered Dare, East Timor, where they received a very warm welcome from a few of the large numbers of refugees sheltering there. However, the refugees must still endure very harsh conditions, and the United Nations cannot guarantee their safety. It is possible that Dare will continue to be targeted by soldiers of Kopassus, the Indonesian special forces.
