Slumming among the ugly poor

Article Abstract:

Cinema is the greatest art form, according to filmmaker Harmony Korine, who developed an interest in cinema at a very early age. He believes that there is no logic to life and that his films work on an intuitive level. His semi-documentary film 'Gummo' has attracted mixed reactions, with some observers believing that it can be compared to a freak show. Korine denies this, stating that he is not voyeuristic. He believes that the film, which uses only four professional actors in a cast of 40, simply shows life as it is.

Get swinging! The merry prankster's back in town

Article Abstract:

Danish filmmaker Soren Kragh-Jacobsen believes that his latest film, 'Mifune,' is a male fantasy. He emphasizes that he wanted this film to be light entertainment and a straightforward love story. He feels very close to the other directors with whom he created Dogme, a group committed to return to the basics of film-making. He believes that he and the other directors compete, but that they also depend heavily on each other as critics.

Blood and guts in high school

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker Alexander Payne does not feel that there are any similarities between his film 'Election,' based on a novel by Tom Perrotta, and conventional Hollywood High School films. He would prefer people to compare his film with 'Zero de Conduite.' He feels both love and hatred for his characters, and acknowledges that they come across as very sad. He believes that he differs from other filmmakers in that he is not afraid of comedy.
