Picking a winner

Article Abstract:

The technique of 'directed evolution,' using random mutagenesis and DNA shuffling, has been used to develop mutants of a bacterial cytochrome P450 enzyme that efficiently use hydrogen peroxide as the source of oxygen. In this way, there is no need for cofactor regeneration. The mutants are more active and possibly more stable. The resulting enzymes could show improved activities in other characteristic P450 transformations. However, there could be restrictions on the stability that can be achieved with haem-dependent enzymes.

Smile! You're on a videolink

Article Abstract:

Videoconferencing has generally been seen as expensive technology, but latest developments in telecommunications and growing competition in the market are making it a more attractive option for many companies. In certain circumstances, videoconferencing can be cheaper than arranging for people to meet directly, especially if long-distance travel is involved. Users report that videoconferencing is preferable to communicating by telephone, as it allows a person's facial expressions to be assessed.

The river of sorrows

Article Abstract:

The Indians of the Amazon in the rainforests of central Brazil could become extinct due to disease such as smallpox and genocide. Some of the Nambikwara tribe have been able to maintain aspects of their traditional life, although they have also appeared in motion pictures without being perturbed. The Indians think more fondly of the traditional life of their great-grandparents prior to 1939 rather than more recent times. The conduct of life of the Amazonian Indians is described.
