So what's David Puttnam ever done to you?

Article Abstract:

The BBC has handled its appointment of a Vice-Chmn insensitively, according to filmmaker David Puttnam, who has failed to gain the position. He was probably rejected by the BBC because he has been critical of what he regards as the BBC's excessive focus on preparing for the digital age. He is obsessed with the fact that the film industry is now dominated by Hollywood, which has aesthetic values to which he feels he cannot subscribe. He believes that the world is moving rapidly towards an information and education age, and feels that the UK has the opportunity to become the Hollywood of education.

Knife across the water

Article Abstract:

Actor Ed Norton is obsessed with his image, according to filmmaker Tony Kaye, who clashed with Norton during the making of 'American History X.' A first version of the film delivered by Kaye in 1997 was very well received by a research audience, as was a second version amended by Norton. This encouraged New Line Cinema to release Norton's version. Kaye has deep regrets that he came very close to what would have been an excellent film. He feels that the film will be successful because it is good, but believes that it could have been even better.

Still riding the New Wave

Article Abstract:

Teamwork is extremely important in film-making, according to French writer and film director Alain Robbe-Grillet. He has always attempted to select his own film crews, and has given them a creative role. He is very interested in the codes of both literature and the cinema, and is fascinated with narrative conventions. Most recently, he has produced 'Un bruit qui rend fou,' and this is being shown at the Institut Francais in London, England, as the culmination of a retrospective of his work.
