Something funny going on at Sky

Article Abstract:

Elisabeth Murdoch, director of programmes and general manager of BSkyB, seems determined to gain control over entertainment programming talent in the UK. She has been attempting to buy into some of the most popular independent production companies, and has already reached a deal for Ginger Media Group, owned by radio broadcaster Chris Evans, to develop programming ideas for BSkyB. Some observers believe that BSkyB will now use a popular mass entertainment channel combined with some sports and some films to develop a number of tiers of pricing to attract new subscribers.

The last of the British movie moguls

Article Abstract:

Lew Grade, who died recently at the age of 91, played a key role in the development of ITV. He was a professional dancer in the 1920s before becoming a theatrical agent. He was involved in the launch of ITV in 1955, and his production arm ITC made many classic serials. His experience in show business allowed him to create the form of light entertainment that came to feature heavily on ITV. He regarded creating a television schedule as being similar to making up a variety show.

They'd rather have quizzed John Prescott

Article Abstract:

People who apply to be members of the audience for the BBC's television programme 'Question Time' generally have firm political views. It is estimated that more than 30,000 people each year apply to be in the audience, and they often ask very searching questions of the politicians and other public figures who appear on the programme. Being in the audience can be very tiring, as extensive preparations must be made, especially if a top politician is appearing.
