Sorry, Mr Hague, but you're fighting the last election again

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that hints by UK Conservative party leader William Hague about the possibility of reducing the higher rate of tax will be sufficient to significantly boost the party's popularity. Most importantly, by opting to concentrate on higher-rate taxpayers, Hague has failed to extend the tax-cutting appeal of the Conservative party beyond the middle classes to the working poor and those slighty above the poor category. Hague would have been wiser to focus on other tax-related issues, such as why many families pay tax and qualify for social security benefits.

Not spin doctor, but counsellor

Article Abstract:

Labour MP Peter Mandelson has recently received considerable media attention as the head of the party's campaign to win the Littleborough and Saddleworth by-election. He has been influential in the party for some time, and his critics now claim that he is the party's real deputy leader. He certainly has considerable strategic skills, but can sometimes be far too critical of his colleagues.
