State may take over failing rail firms

Article Abstract:

The UK government has emphasized that rail companies with poor performance levels will have to show a rapid improvement if they are to retain their franchises. If their performance does not improve, their franchises will be removed and their trains transferred to the British Railway Board. However, Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has stated that rail companies making constructive proposals will be given the opportunity to extend their franchises. It is likely that rail passengers will be given a greater say in whether trains are meeting performance standards.

He wishes to ensure high levels of professionalism in all the company's activities, and is seeking to eliminate unnecessary minor mistakes that alienate customers. He acknowledges that Virgin currently has a poor reputation for punctuality, but emphasizes that only 30% of delays have been attributable to Virgin itself, with the rest being caused by other operators.
