String something simple

Article Abstract:

String quartets have become increasingly fashionable in the UK over recent years, mainly under the influence of the US-based Kronos Quartet, founded in 1973. Fashionable British string quartets such as the Brodsky Quartet, also founded in 1973, do not wear traditional evening dress and often perform standing up. Most new quartets tend to have a quite traditional repertoire, but they play it with great youthful enthusiasm. Chamber music is now more popular than it has been since the 1930s.

Stop the dictators of modern music

Article Abstract:

Musicians feel that it is now time to speak out against the negative impact of atonal music on the classical tradition, according to cellist Julian Lloyd Webber. Contemporary composers have now had enough time to gain the support of audiences, but have still failed to do so. He points to the emergence of a new generation of composers using more audience-friendly styles and to renewed interest in composers whose melodic works were criticized as old-fashioned in the 1950s and 1960s.

Playing like grown-ups

Article Abstract:

It was very difficult to manage the transition from being a child prodigy to being an adult performer, according to Lithuanian violinist Julian Rachlin. He is strongly opposed to the fact that child performers receive a great deal of attention and are then frequently dropped when they reach adulthood. His parents ensured that his performances were limited when he was a child, but he now performs more than 100 concerts a year and travels extensively.
