Sun setting on America's family farms

Article Abstract:

Small farmers in the US face rising debt levels and lower prices for their products. Land speculators are buying many farms. 1,000 Friends of Iowa is a pressure group which seeks to educate the public and politicians about dangers it sees represented by agricultural conglomerates and real estate developers. Industrial hog farming is one factor that has driven down prices, which have fallen lower than previously in the hog cycle. Urban sprawl is becoming a political issue, while there are also concerns about the pollution caused by hog farms.

Heart of prejudice

Article Abstract:

Joseph Conrad's book 'Heart of Darkness,' which tells of a journey through the jungles of the Belgian Congo, shows a westerner who descends into savagery as he forges closer links with Africa. It portrays attitudes which clearly persist today as the west considers whether to intervene in the crisis in Rwanda and Zaire. Many people believe that parts of Africa are mad and dangerous, and that this situation will never change. Looking into the darkness of Africa is uncomfortable for many people, as it forces them to look into their own hearts.

The trials of a Southern state still haunted by its racist past

Article Abstract:

Sam Bowers is on trial in Forrest County, Mississippi, on a charge relating to a murder that took place in 1966 when Vernon Dahmer, a civil rights worker, was killed. Bowers was previously charged with the crime and four juries could not decide on his guilt. Dahmer died after Molotov cocktails were thrown into his family home. His family escaped, and he died. Mississippi has changed in the 30 years since the original trial, but some people from Hattiesburg still see no reason why the trial should be held.
