Super-Lego meets mail-order

Article Abstract:

It has become quite commonplace in Japan since the late 1980s for customers to be able to create their own home out of a wide range of individual components. The modular components are made in factories, and are then supplied to the site, where they are assembled. Toyota, one of the largest housing manufacturers in Japan, has become successful through using the same lean production techniques it applies in the automobile industry. Factories are safer to work in than building sites, and offer cost and time savings.

Looking forward to the Millennium with a new way of living

Article Abstract:

Architect Ralph Erskine has been responsible for designing the Millennium Village scheme for Greenwich, London, England. This will cover 1,377 homes on the site of an old gasworks close to the Millennium Dome. The project, which is due for completion in mid-1999, will include 20 ha of park, allotments and gardens, with housing being concentrated in sub-communities and strong emphasis being placed on public transport. It is hoped that there will be enough people living there to encourage local businesses.
