Tagging along with Michael Howard

Article Abstract:

It has been rumoured that UK Home Secretary Jack Straw is considering releasing 4,000 prisoners early and tagging them. This comes at a time when the prison population is rising rapidly and prison staff are threatening to strike if they do not receive more pay. Straw believes that the political climate would not allow him to let large numbers of petty offenders out on executive release, and therefore seems to have become more in favour of tagging. Trial schemes indicate that tagging can play a valuable role in keeping petty criminals out of prison.

Asylum-seekers hunger for justice

Article Abstract:

There are currently 56,000 request for asylum awaiting consideration by the UK government, with 754 asylum-seekers in jail. Some asylum-seekers spend more than two years in prison before their case is heard in court. There are many difficult issues surrounding asylum, but it is clear that to keep asylum-seekers waiting for so long is injust. Campaigners are now calling for detainees to have the right to a judicial hearing within seve days of incarceration. However, the government continues to emphasise the problem of 'bogus' asylum-seekers.
