Take shelter in property

Article Abstract:

There has been a revival in institutional interest in investment funds which specialise in commercial and residential property in the UK. Property is becoming increasingly regarded as a safe investment, and overseas institutions are being attracted to the UK by high yields. Property is less volatile in the short term than equities, and is particularly attractive at a time when capital values are still around 30% below their 1989 peak and yields are averaging 8%.

Health care is a question of priorities

Article Abstract:

The National Health Service (NHS) is facing great financial burdens as people live longer and medical technology allows diseases which would previously have been fatal to be treated effectively. There is now a clear gap between resources and demand, and this is likely to get worse. The government is now starting to admit that difficult decisions about priorities will have to be made if the NHS is to continue functioning.

Finding new gold for the ivory towers

Article Abstract:

The UK's universities are now having to take a much more business-like approach to obtaining funds. They have begun to request money from former students, often through covenants or affinity credit cards, and are also seeking funds from individual and corporate benefactors. They have been forced to focus on their strengths, appealing particularly to companies working in these areas.
