Taking stock of investment objectives

Article Abstract:

It is important for those who are saving for large expenses, such as funding their children's higher education, to ensure diversity within their Personal Equity Plan portfolio, avoiding being too exposed to general UK stock market volatility. It is worth considering mixing index funds with actively managed funds, and consideration could also be given to corporate-bond Personal Equity Plans, which are usually less risky than equities. For those saving for retirement, the best approach is to have an investment portfolio aiming for growth.

Keep track of the growth markets

Article Abstract:

Tracker funds, low-cost unit and investment trusts which reflect the growth in a stock market index by purchasing the shares of which it consists, performed very strongly in the UK in 1997. However, financial experts believe that the performance of tracker funds may now begin to wane. They advise that investors should consider diversifying into other markets, especially continental Europe, where potential growth is much higher. At least half of any personal equity plan investor's UK exposure should be in large companies.

Investments

Article Abstract:

Many investors have built up a portfolio of personal equity plans (PEPs) in an uncoordinated way, and this has led them to lose track of the initial investment strategy. They now have an unbalanced portfolio, and lack a single adviser to manage the overall investment. It is important to see PEPs not as an independent free-standing investment, but as an extension to a main portfolio. It is worth considering shifting the management of all PEPs to a single manager.
