The National Lottery and its retail implications

Article Abstract:

It is suggested that the National Lottery could be responsible for a 0.3 billion pound sterling drop in retail sales during the first year of its operation. Sales have dropped in non-food sectors. The implications of the National Lottery on retail sales is discussed further, including details of the Lottery's background, consumer trends and participation, advertising, an overview of the sector and Camelot, and forecasts for the future.

Retail sales: overall pub turnover

Article Abstract:

The pub retailing market in the U.K. was worth an estimated 18.2 billion pounds sterling in 1995, against 15.8 billion pounds sterling in 1990. Sales of alcoholic drinks accounted for 54.4% of the overall pub trade in 1995, compared to 60.1% in 1990. During the same period, food sales have risen from 20.9% to 24.2%, while soft drinks sales have remained fairly static at around 8% of the total trade.

The UK market for retail store design, excluding construction and exteriors, is worth between 2-3 billion pounds sterling. The buoyant market is fuelled by retailers' drive to create store differentiation. The market is forecast to continue growing, with a trend towards merger and acquisition activity in all sectors. An analysis of the UK retail store design market is presented in further detail.
