The alternative to crime and exclusions

Article Abstract:

There is much discussion in the media and among politicians in the UK about the causes of and possible cures for serious social problems such as single teenage mothers, crime committed by young people and poverty on housing estates. There are a number of innovative schemes across the country which aim to tackle these issues. These include schemes designed to occupy children during the school holidays, improved sex education for teenage girls and permanent professional workers assisting residents' associations. However, these schemes still suffer from a serious lack of funds.

Suffer the little children

Article Abstract:

Views on handling children in care have progressed considerably since the birth of Thomas Barnado, the founder of Barnado's children's homes, 150 years ago. The charity shut down its last orphanage in 1981, and since then has tried to distance itself from the negative image of the way it ran orphanages in the past. However, some observers believe that modern society does not actually treat children in care any better than in the past. 'Care' has come to be seen as a threat or a punishment, and social workers do not have the resources to cope with all families in need.

Imprisonment of truth

Article Abstract:

It appears that the performance of the UK government is being increasingly measured only by its coverage in tabloid newspapers. There is now very little real public debate about key political issues, and the government simply focuses on producing expensive and meaningless policies which are designed to attract maximum public support. There is no real assessment of whether taxpayers are receiving value for money, and this lack of public debate simply leaves ordinary people with negative views of all politicians.
