The bitter reality of life on the edge of a sectarian swamp

Article Abstract:

There is considerable confusion within Northern Ireland's Orange Order following the arson attack in which three boys died. The cause of the Union has been badly damaged, and the concept of a British Ulster has come to be regarded very negatively in mainland Britain. It is now vital that David Trimble and his moderates prevail, with the IRA making the practical gesture of decommissioning. If this does not happen, then there is a risk that Northern Ireland will decline into bitter sectarianism.

A killing that opens up a festering old wound

Article Abstract:

The assassination of William Stobie in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is closely linked with that of solicitor Pat Finucane in 1989. Stobie stood trial earlier in 2001 for involvement in Finucane's murder. The trial collapsed, but it was clear that some people wanted Stobie removed because he knew too much.

Rioting goes on in Ulster because young men enjoy it

Article Abstract:

Rioting is a common annual event in Northern Ireland because young men continue to enjoy it. Those who have the ability to stop the rioting fail to do so because they feel that rioting gives some political advantage.
