The burial ground of our history
Article Abstract:
Investigating the Stationery Office's historic archive has been a fascinating process, according to Tim Coates, who has so far opened around 600 or 700 boxes out of several thousand. He enjoys the fact that he never knows what he will find next. He expresses admiration for the very high standards of literacy displayed by officials who wrote reports many years ago, and admits that he has been very moved by some of the material he has uncovered. He was particularly interested in the report of Lieutenant-General George White, who commanded the besieged British Army at Ladysmith during the Boer War.

A case of a case-history too far?
Article Abstract:
The forthcoming 30th anniversary of the UK's Abortion Act has highlighted the fact that there is still strong media demand for abortion case histories. Abortion certainly still needs publicity, as many women find it hard to obtain an abortion on the National Health Service. However, case histories are the wrong form of publicity. There are few women who are prepared to talk about their experiences of having an abortion, and using case histories often leads to distorted coverage.

The fat man in history
Article Abstract:
Shakespeare's character Sir John Falstaff is unique, both in Shakespeare and in Western literature as a whole. He is particularly notable in the two parts of 'Henry IV' for his relationship with the young Prince of Wales, who has chosen him as a surrogate father. Shakespeare drew on many sources for Falstaff, and this character has an additional energy that seems almost primitive and pagan. Falstaff can be seen as part of the culture of fertility which underlies civilization.
