The financial folklore that cannot be banked on

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of developments recently that have prompted a re-assessment of several traditional assumptions about the banking industry. The merger of Union Bank of Switzerland and Swiss Bank Corp has indicated that Switzerland will not necessarily always have three large banks, as has been believed for many years. Developments in East Asia have highlighted that it is not advisable for banks to be too close to their clients, especially commercial clients. It is also becoming clear that it is not necessary to be a bank to gain a strong presence in banking.

A bit of a slowdown, then back to normal? It won't be that easy

Article Abstract:

It is quite possible that those who believe that UK economic growth will slow down in 1999 and that there will then be a return to trend growth will be proved correct. However, it can also be argued that a period of below-trend growth is equally likely. There is still a danger of global recession, and this means that there are good reasons for being more concerned about the prospects for economic growth in 2000 than in 1999.

The Governor should not lie back and think only of England
